FEATURED RESOURCE:

Forces-Helpline.com

COMMENT:

War is stressful to both military personnel and their families. I have included this category because, from time-to-time, I have receive letters from individuals in this select group, about a variety of concerns, including financial and other problems, loneliness and worries about personal safety. When military personnel bully a member of the armed forces, the enemy is no longer only external. I am glad to see a group assisting members of the British Armed Forces deal with this tragic and potentially lethal issue.

FEATURED RESOURCE:

BBC News - Indian farmer suicide toll rises

COMMENT:

The margialized are always at risk of committing suicide. More than 600 farmers have committed suicide in India's Vidarbha region in a one year period. Campaigners say that farmers are forced to borrow money from money-lenders to buy seeds, and then are thrown into crisis after crops fail due to droughts.

This tragedy flies in the face of the fact that the millionaire club in India has grown by a dramatic 19.3 per cent. The 10th annual World Wealth Report, by investment group Merrill Lynch and Capgemini, says that India along with Brazil and Russia house the top fastest growing population of high networth individuals—those with assets of at least $1 million.

FEATURED RESOURCE:

Telegraph.co.uk - Call to ban suicide websites as second pupil kills herself

COMMENT:

I was shocked to find, in the 1990's, Web sites that actually encouraged to kill themselves. This is why I created the Friendship Letter. Poor 13-year old Jenny, who hanged herself after visiting a suicide chat room, could have found resources online if she was despairing and contemplating suicide.

I have answered many letters from young teens. I would have told Jenny, as I have done with others, to talk with someone --a teacher, school nurse, close friend, family member of the clergy. I would have also given her resources to crisis centers, hotlines, and life-supporting suicide chat lines. I would also have made a prayer for her.

Tragically, her family and friends will now go through profound grief and a whole range of emotions which I am sure Jenny never considered. She is simply too young to understand the stages of bereavement. My prayer is for Jenny's family and friends. Read suicide survivor testimonies.

In the same way sites promoting hate and racism are prohibited, at least here in Canada, sites that promote suicide, the killing of oneself, should also be banned.

New Suicide Prevention Help Global Web Directory

In 1998, I created a suicide prevention Web site called Suicide Prevention Help - The Friendship Letter for those who are despairing and contemplating suicide. Over the years, I have answered thousand of letters from readers, offering a few kind words and online and offline resources that they would find useful.

I am currently developing a global Suicide Prevention Help Web Directory of resources that will be valuable to researchers, practitioners, lay people and students. Included in the directory are categories such as Conferences and Events, Crisis Centers, Education, Government Initiatives, Guides and Directories, Helping Someone, News, Organizations. Personal Testimonies, Research, Statistics, Support Groups, Survivor Support, Teens and Young Adults, Training Programs and more.

Googling the word "suicide" yields 147,000,000 results. The directory offers Web users a positive resource in finding information relating to suicide and suicide prevention.

This blog will provide details of updates to the directory.

Individuals and organizations are welcome to suggest appropriate Web sites for inclusion in the directory.
