FEATURED RESOURCE:
Telegraph.co.uk - Call to ban suicide websites as second pupil kills herself
COMMENT:
I was shocked to find, in the 1990's, Web sites that actually encouraged to kill themselves. This is why I created the Friendship Letter. Poor 13-year old Jenny, who hanged herself after visiting a suicide chat room, could have found resources online if she was despairing and contemplating suicide.
I have answered many letters from young teens. I would have told Jenny, as I have done with others, to talk with someone --a teacher, school nurse, close friend, family member of the clergy. I would have also given her resources to crisis centers, hotlines, and life-supporting suicide chat lines. I would also have made a prayer for her.
Tragically, her family and friends will now go through profound grief and a whole range of emotions which I am sure Jenny never considered. She is simply too young to understand the stages of bereavement. My prayer is for Jenny's family and friends. Read suicide survivor testimonies.
In the same way sites promoting hate and racism are prohibited, at least here in Canada, sites that promote suicide, the killing of oneself, should also be banned.
